The Maulid Nabi Al-Barzanji, authored by Sheikh Ja'far Al-Barzanji, is a distinguished work commemorating the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. The name "Barzanji" is derived from the author's own name, Sheikh Ja'far bin Husin bin Abdul Karim bin Muhammad Al-Barzanji, a noted Sufi figure. His work, commonly referred to as Mawlid Al-Barzanji, is originally titled ‘Iqd Al-Jawahir (The Necklace of Jewels) or ‘Iqd Al-Jawhar fi Mawlid An-Nabiyyil Azhar.

Barzanji is also the name of a region in Kurdistan. The term gained prominence in the 1920s when Sheikh Mahmud Al-Barzanji led a national Kurdish uprising against British rule in Iraq. The Barzanji text has become notably popular among Malay communities as a significant recitation during Maulid celebrations, though it has faced criticism from some who view it as an innovation (bid’ah), often stemming from limited understanding or strong adherence to particular interpretations.

This critical viewpoint tends to revisit long-resolved scholarly debates on differences of opinion that have been addressed by scholars for centuries. Despite this, the practice of reciting Kitab Al-Barzanji persists in various celebrations, such as weddings, gatherings, and communal feasts. Typically, these events feature the reading of Al-Barzanji from the first to the fourth chapter, followed by the Marhaban and concluding with a prayer.
